A coal conveyor belt is 900 mm wide and travels at 2,2 m/s. There are plans to build a surge bin to hold enough coal for two days' production. Calculate the bin capacity required if the bin is intended to hold coal produced in two eight-hour shifts. State any assumptions that you may make.

QUESTION 4 (Belt conveyors)

4.1

A coal conveyor belt is 900 mm wide and travels at 2,2 m/s. There are plans to build a surge bin to hold enough coal for two days' production. Calculate the bin capacity required if the bin is intended to hold coal produced in two eight-hour shifts. State any assumptions that you may make.

4.2

The following particulars apply to an inclined belt conveyor:

Length of conveyor (loading end to discharge end): 100 m
Speed of belt: 1,5 m/s
Angle of wrap around driving pulley: 220 degrees
Coefficient of friction between belt and driving pulley: 0,3
Mass of rock conveyed (mass flow rate): 300 t/h
The discharge end is 22 m higher than the loading end. The total friction is equivalent to a force of 6,5 kN in the belt at the head pulley. The efficiency of the drive is 90%.

4.2.1 Calculate the power of the motor.
4.2.2 Calculate the minimum tension in the slack side of the belt as it leaves the driving pulley.
