A junction that is a protein channel linking the cytoplasms of adjacent cells is called

Expert Answer

Step 1

The cell membrane is a biological membrane which separates the cell from its external environment. In tissues, it serves to separate the adjacent cells and prevents mixing up of their cytoplasm.

Step 2

To allow the cellular communication and adhesion in multicellular organisms, there are certain junctions present in the animal cells. These are composed of proteins. Plant cells lack these junctions but have plasmodesmata and cell wall for the purpose of communication and adhesion respectively.

Step 3

On the basis of function, these junctions are classified into three types:
1. Anchoring junctions: Those which serve the purpose of adhesion of cells to each other as well as extracellular matrix.
