When an object is thrown obliquely near the Earth's surface, it moves in a curved path. The object is called projectile and the motion is called projectile motion. The acceleration of the projectile is almost constant and is equal to the acceleration due to gravity, g.

During the projectile motion, the object experiences only vertical acceleration in the downward direction(g). There is no horizontal component of acceleration present. That is why the horizontal component of its velocity remains constant throughout and the vertical component of the velocity changes during the motion.
