Osmosis is the movement of water through a semi permeable membrane from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution.  When a cell is placed in hypertonic solution( when the concentration of solute is more in the surrounding water than in the cell) water moves from the cell into the surrounding more concentrated medium. This happens due to exosmosis.

When a cell is kept in a hypotonic solution water moves into the cell from the medium resulting in the bulging out of cell. This is caused by endosmosis.
