Question

a. Explain how a graded membrane potential is created when a neurotransmitter is bound by a postsynaptic cell.

b. Describe the major events of an action potential using the graph of membrane potential.

Expert Solution
Answer a

When a neurotransmitter is bound by a postsynaptic cell, there is a change in the resting membrane potential of the postsynaptic neuron. A potential is induced in this neuron. If this potential does not reach up to firing potential, a graded potential is formed and the signal does not pass forward. If Firing potential is reached, then action potential is generated and thereby the signal is passed to the next neuron.
