Introduction
A food chain is a sequence of organisms in which each organism feeds on the organism that precedes it in the chain. It is a model that shows how energy and nutrients flow from one organism to another in an ecosystem. The chain typically starts with a primary producer, such as plants or algae, which are then eaten by primary consumers, such as herbivores. The herbivores are then eaten by secondary consumers, such as carnivores, and so on. Decomposers, such as fungi and bacteria, break down the remains of dead plants and animals, returning nutrients to the soil and starting the chain over again.
