Question

Assume that all elementary events in the same sample space are equally likely.

A family has three children. Assuming a boy is as likely as a girl to have been born, what are the following probabilities?

One is a girl and two are boys.

At least 2 are boys.
Expert Solution
Step 1

Let us denote G=girl and B=boy

So the possible outcomes are {GGG, GGB, GBG, GBB, BGG, BGB, BBG, BBB}. Total 8 outcomes.

We can have one girl and 2 boys for the outcomes= {GBB, BGB, BBG}. So 3 outcomes.

So the probability of 1 girl and 2 boys=n(1 girl and 2 boys)n(all outcomes)=38
