Expert Solution
Given Data

Mass of the first block = m1 = 4 kg

Mass of the second block = m2 = 1 kg

Acceleration = a =?

Tension = T =?

Solution: For Acceleration

                                   Physics homework question answer, step 2, image 1

For m1 = 4 kg:

Using newton's second law,

                                                T = m1a                         . . . . . (i)

For m2 = 1 kg:

Using newton's second law,

                                              W - T = m2a

                                           m2g - T = m2a                   . . . . . (ii)

Substituting equation (i) in equation (ii),

                                          m2g - m1a = m2a

Therefore,                          a=m2gm1+m2

Substituting the values,

                                          a=1×9.84+1

                                          a=1.96 m/s2  2 m/s2
