Water has the smallest volume due to the combined effects of contraction and expansion at atemperature or the water has a maximum density at a temperatureof 4 C And below 4"C temperature, the water starts to expand as the crystalline lattice is formed. Above 4°C temperature, the density of water is increased because of increase in molecular vibrational activity.
