  • The cell cycle is divided into two stages that are interphase and mitosis. During interphase cell prepares for division by growing in size and replicating its DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). It consists of G1, S, and G2 phase. Mitosis is a series of events that leads to equal distribution of chromosomes among daughter cells.
  • In a typical human cell, the duration of cell cycle is 24 hours. The following are the duration of interphase and mitotic stages
  • Interphase: 23 hours (G1: 11 hours, S: 8 hours, G2: 4 hours)
  • Mitosis takes 1 hour to complete. The order of different mitotic stages on the basis of time taken: prophase (±1 hour) > metaphase (less than 1 hour) > anaphase (less than 30 minutes) > telophase (minutes)
Step 2
  • A cell spends 90% of its time in interphase stage of cell division. During the G1 phase, cellular growth takes place. The S phase involves replication of DNA. After S phase, G2 phase occurs in which cellular growth continues and synthesis of proteins required for mitosis takes place.
  • During mitosis condensation of chromatin into chromosomes takes place. This aids in equal distribution of genetic material to daughter cells.
