Q2

On the Galapagos Islands, researchers have been monitoring a population of finches
for decades. These finches eat seeds, and can crack seeds of different sizes
depending on the size (depth) of their beak: finches with large beaks are good at
cracking and eating large, hard seeds; finches with small beaks do well on small
seeds. In 1977, a very severe drought caused seed production to drop drastically;
most of the few plants that did flower and produced seeds were plants that make
large, hard seeds. As a consequence, many finches that did not have a large enough
beak to crack the hard seeds, died of starvation.

Figure A below shows how much variation there was in beak size among
individuals before (1976) and after (1978) the drought year. The mean (small
triangle on the horizontal axis) shifted from about 8.8 mm to about 9.8 mm.
Figure B shows midoffspring values of beak size plotted agains midparent
values, in 1976 (black dots) and 1978 (open circles). The straights lines show
the regressions across the 1976 data points (lower, plain line) and the 1978
data points (upper, dashed line).
