Animals have soft tissues, such as muscles, in their bodies. Myosin and actin protein filaments glide against one another in muscle cells to produce contraction, changing the cell's length and shape. Together, the muscles generate force and movement.

Myofilaments are the protein microfilaments that make up the myofibrils. Actin, myosin, troponin, and tropomyosin are the four protein types that make up these myofilaments. Because the contract (shorten) muscle fibers, actin, and myosin are jointly referred to as "contractile proteins."
