Question

Cultural relativism refers to the idea that we shouldn't evaluate other cultures according to our own notions of what is right or bad, unusual or common. Instead, we should work to comprehend other groups' cultural practises within their own cultural framework.

Case 1

In the Maasai tribe of Kenya, East Africa, teenage boys undergo a voluntary circumcision. The circumcision is done with no anesthesia; in fact, if the boy shows any sign of fear or discomfort, he may be ridiculed or, worse, not allowed to join the adult men’s group.

"3" : Genital mutilation of individuals must not be normalised despite cultural relativity. It goes against the human rights principles enshrined to each of us on the behest of being humans.

Case 2

In Afghanistan, under the 20 year rule of the Taliban, severe restrictions were placed on women in public life. During this time, women were banned from laughing loudly in public, playing sports, and using cosmetics. Windows were painted so that women could not be seen from outside their homes. Women were not allowed unaccompanied in the streets without a close male relative.

"3" : This violates fundamental human rights of an entire gender in the given state which is imposed by an organisation which claims it to be a divine command. This requires global attention.

Case 3

In many cultures throughout the world, polygamy is common, especially an arrangement in which one man takes several brides. Brides are often 20-30 years younger than their husbands. Co-wives share the burden of labor and child-rearing.

"2" : Polygamy is practised legally in several countries and is accepted to some religions and cultures. However, under-age marriages should call for legal scrutiny yet cultural relativity can't be subsided in this case.
