Question

Describe SRAM and its most common use.

Expert Solution
Step 1: Definition

Random Access Memory (RAM) is a computer data storage which allows information to be stored and that can be accessed quickly and randomly.

  • In random access memory the data which is used frequently or currently in use, the application programs are stored so that it can be read quickly by the computer's processor.
  • RAM is a volatile memory. This implies that the data in RAM stays until the computer power is on.
  • The RAM loses the data when the computer is turned off. Whenever the computer is turned on, the operating system is loaded along with all the application programs and files which are used frequently.

Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) is a semiconductor memory that holds the data in static form and static memory does not need to be refreshed periodically.

  • SRAM is faster than the Dynamic RAM (DRAM) in a way that the access time of SRAM is “10” nanoseconds and in case of DRAM access time is about “60” nanoseconds. SRAM requires power to flow continuously in order to store bits of information.
  • But SRAM is expensive as compared to DRAM.
