Question
Describe the muscles of the eye and the movements they
produce.
Expert Solution
Step 1
The eye consists of three pairs of antagonist muscles that control the movement of the eye. These include:
superior and inferior rectus muscle
lateral and medial rectus muscles
superior and inferior oblique muscles.
These muscles are responsible for moving the eye up, down, sideways and rotating the eyes.
Superior rectus muscle: It is located on the top of the eye and helps in looking up. It performs the function of elevation.
Inferior rectus muscle: It is located on the bottom of the eye. It is responsible for depression of the eye, which allows the eye to look down. It also performs adduction of the eye and helps the eye to rotate laterally.
