Describe the structure and function of platelets?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Platelets are referred to as components in the blood. The platelets are formed within the bone marrow. Bone marrow is a spongy tissue present in the bones.

Step 2
  • Platelets, also known as thrombocytes irregularly shaped molecules comprise no nucleus.
  • They are only two to three micrometers in width.
  • These are not cells; these are the fragments that megakaryocytes produce.

Anatomy and Physiology homework question answer, step 2, image 1

Platelets functions in the clotting of blood at the time of wound healing. At the time of clotting, various factors are secreted by the platelets. The factor that increases their aggregation is known as thromboxane A.

Platelets also secrete factors known as platelet-derived growth factors. These are wound healing growth factors. TGF beta is a factor released by platelet that causes the accumulation of extracellular matrix into a healing wound.

Vascular endothelial growth factor functions in the angiogenesis so that new blood vessels can be regrown at the injured site.
