Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the genetic material encoded with thousands of genes. These genes are the unit if hereditary which comprises codons for 20 amino acids that synthesizes proteins responsible for various genotypic and phenotypic traits.  The double-helical structure of DNA consists of pentose sugar, phosphate and nitrogenous bases. These all are linked together forming phosphate backbone. Due to the presence of phosphate groups, DNA carries overall negative charge. There are four nitrogenous bases in the DNA, Adenine and guanine which are categorized under purines due to diphenyl structure. Cytosine and thymine categorized under pyrimidine because of a single ring structure. The adenine bonds with the thymine and the cytosine bonds with the guanine. This pairing between the nitrogenous bases to maintain the stability is called base pairing.

RNA (ribonucleic acid) is also a type of nucleic acid like DNA but has few structural and functional differences such as, RNA is unstable due to the presence of hydroxyl group at the 2' position of ribose sugar. Most of the RNA are single stranded, and contain uracil instead of thymine which is analogous to it hence, it can easily pair with adenine. They are of three types, mRNA (messenger RNA) tRNA(transfer RNA) and rRNA(ribosomal RNA). All of these RNA molecules play vital roles in protein synthesis.
