Distinguish between the internal and external urethral sphincters.
The urethral sphincter refers to the muscles which are present within the urethra of the urinary system. These muscles functions in controlling the urine excretion from the urinary bladder via the urethra. The contraction of these muscles causes the closing of the urethra.
Internal urethral sphincters |
External urethral sphincters |
The internal urethral sphincters are involuntary. The urinary bladder gets filled; the micturition is triggered, leading to urine passage from the bladder to the urethra. Both of them are involuntary actions.
|
The external urethral sphincter has the voluntary function for the urine flow from the urinary bladder to the urethra. |
It encircles the bladder opening in the direction of the urethra and allows the passage for urine by relaxation. |
It encircles the urethra outside the urinary bladder and relaxes for urination. |
