Question

Do all dinoflagellates have chloroplasts?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Dinoflagellates are unicellular eukaryotes. Most of them are marine algae but they also found in freshwater habitats. They are one of the largest groups of saltwater algae but this group is smaller than the diatoms. The distribution of dinoflagellates population depends upon the sea surface temperature, depth, and salinity.

Step 2

Several dinoflagellates are photosynthetic but many of them are mixotrophic that means they combine photosynthesis with the ingestion of prey (myzocytosis and phagotrophy). Approximately half of the species of dinoflagellates are autotrophs that have chloroplasts and half of the species are heterotroph that means they are nonphotosynthetic.
