Question

Given the reaction below, if 23.5 moles ammonia forms, how many moles of ammonium carbonate decomposed?
 (NH4)2CO3 (s) → 2 NH3 (g) + CO2 (g) + H2O (g)

Expert Solution
Step 1

The chemical equation to form ammonia by decomposition of ammonium carbonate is

                                       (NH4)2CO3 (s) ----> 2 NH3 (g) + CO2 (g) + H2O (g)

From this chemical equation looking at the stoichiometric coefficient of reactant and product we can say that 1 mol of ammonium carbonate decomposed to form 2 mol of ammonia. so lets X mol of ammonium carbonate decomposed to form 23.5 mol of ammonia

                                              1 mol of (NH4)2CO3  =  2 mol of NH3

                    so                      X mol of (NH4)2CO = 23.5 mol of NH3

                    on cross multiplying we get,
