Question

Graph the hyperbola, (x - 2)2/25 - (y + 3)2/16 = 1. Locate the foci and find the equations of the asymptotes.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Given that:

The equation of the hyperbola, x-2225 - y+3216 = 1 .

Step 2

By using,

The standard form of right - left facing hyperbola  x-h2a2 - y - k2b2 = 1 ,

Foci = ( h + c , k) , ( h- c, k) , where c = a2 +b2

Asymptotes  : y = ± ba ( x - h) + k

Step 3

To find the equations of the asymptotes :

By using the above formula,

Compare the given equation with the above standard form equation of the hyperbola,

To get,

a 2 = 25a=  5, b2 = 16 b = 4 , h = 2, and k = -3  .

By using the above formula,

To find c :

c = a2 +b2 = 25+16 = 41
