Me: The biotechnological application in fisheries and aquaculture can change
people's lives to meet the demands for food production. Such application can
also remedy the ecosystem imbalances that natural and human interferences
have caused. Scientific techniques have been applied to fish breeding, making
fish feed formulation, curing fish diseases, mitigation of damage to the aquatic
environment, and species identification-characterization. One example of
biotechnology's contributions to the aquaculture industry is depicted in the video
clip "Biotechnology: Changing Lives in Asia-Pacific" by the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations, in which the Thai shrimp industry was
devastated by Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) caused by pathogenic bacteria,
which significantly reduced production. With the introduction of biotechnology
through the treatment of Probiotic a good bacteria which treated the water
quality to control the level of pathogens, the shrimp industry was recovered from
significant shrimp mortality. Biotechnology could be used for a variety of
applications. The use of probiotics is just one of the ways that biotechnology is
changing people's lives.
In conclusion, biotechnology offers significant potential for fisheries and
aquaculture. However, it should be noted that the use of biotechnology must be
thoroughly vetted in terms of its positive potential and potential risks to the
environment, which could harm wild fish; for example, the emergence of
genetically modified farmed fish could harm wild fish through increased
competition and predation.

Human instinct to survive and curiosity led us to developed a lot of
technologies dated way back from stone age to present. These
technologies were utilized in a daily basis. Correlation of technologies
and its negative factors can not be separated or even prevented. Every
technology we developed always have parallel negative effect. The only
measures we can only do is to minimized the negative factors but we can
not eliminate them totally.
