how can you tell is an equation is linear? is y=3x linear?

Expert Answer

Step 1

A linear equation can be written in the form y=mx+b or Ax+By=C.

Where, m,b,A,B,C are constants.

Linear equation only contain x and y. It does not have higher powers of x and y like x^2,y^2,x^3,y^3 etc. It may contain only x or y also.

Linear equation is called linear because  its graph would be a straight line.

Step 2

Examples of linear equation: y=5x+6 , y=9x , y= -4x+3 , y=-6x-1 , y=6 ...
