Question
How do uncoupling agents work?
Expert Solution
Step 1
Uncoupling agents are also known as uncoupler. They are molecules that disrupts the oxidative phosphorylation in prokaryotes and mitochondria or photophosphorylation in chloroplasts and cyanobacteria by dissociating the reactions of ATP synthesis from the electron transport chain. Uncoupling agents are proteins which are actually mitochondrial transporters present in the inner membrane of mitochondria. They are found in all mammals and plants. They genearally belong to the family of anion mitochondrial carriers.
