How might antibiotic resistance be prevented?

Antibiotics are antimicrobial substances that control or inhibit the growth of microorganisms, particularly the bacteria. Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to humans globally. When pathogenic bacteria survive even upon administering an antibiotic then the bacteria has successfully resisted the effect of the antibiotic. This phenomenon is called as antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is particularly harmful to people who have compromised immune systems.

The following are some of the ways in which antibiotic resistance can be prevented:

  • Avoiding increased prescription of antibiotics.
  • Avoiding prescription of antibiotics to common viral infection such as flu.
  • Strict regulations to prevent self-prescription of antibiotics.
  • Antibiotics should not be sold as over-the-counter medicine in pharmacies.
  • Maintaining proper hygiene and practicing best hygiene methods in all places thus preventing the occurrence of the infection itself.
  • Taking due vaccinations.
  • Cooking clean food, using clean and purified water.
