How might the temperature and pH tolerance of a
hyperthermophile living in a solfatara differ from that of a
hyperthermophile living in a hydrothermal vent?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The organism that develops in the environment with an extremely higher temperature is known as hyperthermophiles. The optimum temperature for hyperthermophiles is above 80 °C. Some hyperthermophiles can even develop at a temperature of 100 °C. The range of optimum pH for hyperthermophiles is between 4.5 to 10.

A hydrothermal vent is a narrow opening found near the active volcanos in the deep sea. The hydrothermal vents are biologically productive. At hydrothermal vents, temperature ranges from 60 °C to up to 464 °C and pH is slightly acidic from 5.1 to up to 5.4.

Solfatara is a volcano on the earth's surface. The temperature at solfatara is up to 100 °C and the pH ranges from 2 to 6.
