list the defining characteristics of skeletal muscle; and

Expert Solution
Step 1

Skeletal muscles are organs of the vertebrate muscular system that are primarily linked to the skeleton through tendons. Muscle fibers are made up of muscle cells that are substantially longer than those seen in other forms of muscle tissue. Because to the configuration of the sarcomeres, the muscular tissue of a skeletal muscle is striated, giving it a striped look.

The somatic nervous system is in charge of skeletal muscles, which are voluntary muscles. The two types of muscle include cardiac muscle, which is striated, and smooth muscle, which is non-striated; both of these types of muscular tissue are involuntary, or controlled by the autonomic nervous system.

Step 2

Skeletal muscles have the following characteristics:

1.The ability of skeletal muscle to shorten when forced is known as contractility. The structures to which skeletal muscles are attached move when they contract. During contraction, skeletal muscles shorten violently, but they lengthen slowly. Gravity or the contraction of an opposing muscle creates a force that pushes the shortened muscle lengthening it.

2.The ability of skeletal muscle to respond to a stimulus is defined as its excitability. The stimulus is normally generated by nerves that we can regulate.

3.The term "extensibility" refers to the ability to stretch skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscles can be stretched to their usual resting length and to a limited extent beyond after a contraction.

4.Elasticity refers to a muscle's capacity to return to its resting length after being stretched.
