As per his theory, the human mind has 3 main components, name as, conscious mind, pre-conscious mind, and unconscious mind. He was of the opinion that the unconscious mind consist of painful or distressing memories that is usually responsible for one's abnormal behavioral patterns. 

Psycho-sexual development: Freud proposes that as child grows, he passes through a series of stages, name as, 

  • Oral stage: It is the phase , in which, the child primary root of interaction is mouth. The child indulge in rooting and sucking reflex, seek gratification of needs through mouth only. 
  • Anal stage: It is the phase, where the child learn to control his/her bladder and bowel movement. Focus is on toilet training. 
  • Phallic stage: It is the phase, in which the focus is on the genitals, the child learn the difference between males and females. 
  • Latency Stage: It is the phase, in which the sexual feelings become inactive, and focus is on developing social skills. 
  • Genital stage: It is the phase, in which the focus is again on the genitals. It starts from puberty and last throughout the life, and also Freud was of the opinion that ego and superego was fully-functioning at this phase.
