Name and briefly describe the types of motility that occur in the large intestine.
Large intestine is the final section of the gastrointestinal system and here water is reabsorbed, remaining waste water is stored as feces to be removed and large intestinal motility is refers to the movements of the digestive system.
a) Segmentation contractions: It is a cyclic intestinal motility that moves chyme or food bolus in both directions, helps in greater mixing with the secretions of the intestine and ensures maximal absorption of nutrients by the epithelial cells. These contractions are prominent in some species and forms hausta.
b) Antiperistaltic contractions propagate toward the ileum: It helps to retard the food movements of ingesta through the colon.
c) Mass movements: It is also known as giant migrating contractions, and this type of motility does not seen in digestive tube but the pattern of this contraction is very intense, prolonged peristaltic and it helps to propel the chyme/food bolus toward the rectum.
