Name the classes of synovial joints based upon the joint surface
shapes, and identify the types of movement permitted.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The skeletal system of the body consists of bones and joints. The bones are the vital body parts that are responsible for providing structural support to the soft tissues and organs present in the body. In an adult human body, there are a total of 206 bones that form the skeleton. The bones of the skeletal system responsible for providing structural framework are connected to each other by joints. Thus, the point of contact at which two bones meet is called a joint. The joints are also referred to as articulations as the bones are articulated with each other at a joint. The formation of joints between two bones is facilitated by the ligament. A ligament is a dense, white band of fibrous elastic tissue which connects one end of the bone to the other to form a joint. The ligament is responsible for cushion formation between bones at the joints therefore preventing the dislocation of the joint.

The movement and the stability of each articulation is determined by the structure of articulation. There is an inverse relationship between joint mobility and stability. On the basis of the structure, the joints or articulations can be of three types: fibrous joints, cartilaginous joints, and synovial joints. The classification is done on the binding tissue present in the joint and  the presence or absence of a cavity in the joint.
