Bones make up the skeletal system of the body providing structure and protection to the organs. Bones allow us to perform physical tasks and movement and also provide mineral storage like calcium and phosphate, fat storage, hormone production and blood cell formation. The human skeletal system is made up of over 200 bones. Bones can be placed under two categories : axial (found in the head and torso, making up the spine, rib cage and the skull) and appendicular (found in the appendages, making up the arms and legs, pelvis and shoulders). Bones can also be classified by shape, being either long, short, flat or irregular.
