Pb2+ SO42- = PbSO42+ and 2- cancel each other out.Pb2+ Cl- = PbCl2Where does the 2 from Cl2 come from?

Pb2+ SO42- = PbSO4

2+ and 2- cancel each other out.

Pb2+ Cl- = PbCl2

Where does the 2 from Cl2 come from?

Step 1

In PbSO4 the valency of lead and sulfate are +2 and -2, hence they cancel out each other. The formula is determined by criss-cross method as shown below.

Pb2 SO4

Pb2 SO4 2- Pb2(SO4)2

Step 2

Now since the ratio of the two valency is 2:2, therefore the formula should be Pb2(SO4)2 but we take the simplest ratio which is 1:1. Therefore the formula becomes PbSO4.

Step 3

Now similarly for PbCl2, the criss...
