People with a genetic condition known as Li– Fraumeni syndrome inherit one mutant copy of the TP53 gene. These people have a high risk of developing a number of different cancers, such as breast cancer, leukemia, bone cancer, adrenocortical tumors, and brain tumors. Explain how mutations in one cancer-related gene can give rise to such a diverse range of tumors.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Li–Fraumeni syndrome is a rare hereditary (autosomal dominant) cancer predisposition syndrome. The most common reason for Li–Fraumeni syndrome is the mutation of the TP53 gene. Mutation in the CHEK2 gene is also seen in certain cases.
