Project 1 Bone Diseases: Osteomyelitis Bubsy is a 15-year-old girl who was playing tennis when she fractured her arm. A few weeks later, she developed a high fever, had chills and nausea. Her mother took her to the hospital because she was limping and could not lift her arm. After examining her and reviewing the results of her lab tests, the doctor told Bubsy's mother that Bubsy was suffering from osteomyelitis. Frustrated and anxious, Bubsy and her mother asked for more information. The doctor explained that when Bubsy's arm was fractured, some of the blood vessels in her bone were cut causing bleeding and formation of a blood clot. Bacteria invaded the blood clot and stimulated inflammation of the bone marrow in the medullary cavity of the diaphysis of her arm. The inflammation was also induced in the spongy bone and the growth plate within the epiphysis of her arm. As a result of inflammation, some of Bubsy's bone tissue died and the infection spread to the periosteum of her bone and eventually to other long bones in her body causing her to limp. Help Bubsy and her mother understand what has happened to her bones by completing the following tasks: Draw and label the structure of a long bone. Explain how bone grows in length.
