Step 1 Introduction on Prolactin:

Prolactin is a hormone that is made by the pituitary gland which is located at the bottom of the brain. It causes breasts to grow and develop and causes milk to be made after a baby is born. Normally, both men and women have lesser amounts of prolactin in their blood. The hormone levels are controlled by other hormones called prolactin inhibiting factors such as dopamine. At the time of pregnancy, prolactin levels shoots up. After the baby is born, the estrogen level drops and progesterone also drops. High prolactin levels trigger the body to make milk for breastfeeding.
