Question 1-15 In the past, some scientists accepted the theory of spontaneous generation. This theory states that organisms can arise from nonliving matter. Currently, scientists use the cell theory to explain the origin and growth of new organisms. Which of these statements is a key idea of cell theory and a rejection of spontaneous generation? O The cell is the basic unit of life. O All living things are made of matter. O All cells arise from pre-existing cells by division. O All cells are formed from the combination of two other cells.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Cell is a basic structural and functional unit of life. It consists of aqueous compartment surrounded by cell membrane, which is capable of performing individual functions and independent existence. Cell organisms can be of two types unicellular and multicellular. German botanist Schleiden and British zoologist Schwann in 1839, developed cell theory which states that "all living things are made up of cells and the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life". In 1855, Rudolf Virchow modified this cell theory and said "all living cells arise from pre-existing cells". Over time cell theory continue to evolve and forms modern cell theory, which states that:

  • All cellular living organisms are made up of one or more cells.
  • Cell is the structural and functional unit of life.
  • All cells arise from preexisting cells by division.
  • Energy flow occurs within cells.
  • Cells contain hereditary information of cells which keep on getting passed from cell to cell.
  • All cells have the same basic chemical components.
