Question
The AV node fires, traveling down the Bundle of His Branches and to the Purkinje Fibers. This causes the _______________ to contract.
Expert Solution
Step 1
The atrioventricular node (AV node) is present near the coronary sinus opening. The specialized tissue of the AV node continues as the bundle of His. The Purkinje fibers are present in the subendocardial surface of the wall of the ventricles.
The impulses from the AV node descend down to the two branches of the bundle. The right and the left bundle branches conduct the impulses to the Purkinje fibers in the right and left ventricles. As the Purkinje fibers are present in the ventricular walls, they conduct the impulses to the myocardium of the ventricles causing ventricular systole.
