Chemicals produced by plants are called phytochemicals. These chemicals have protective properties. Phytochemical may also provide health benefits to the human. Some of the researched types of phytochemicals are antioxidants, including vitamin E and C, and polyphenols which include flavinoids like resveratrol, catechin, and quercetin. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables provide a number of phytochemicals. They may help to reduce the risk of blood clots, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
