Treatment of any alkene with hot KMnO4 in presence of base i.e OH- breaks the double bond and replaces it by C=O

Now if the carbon with double bond O formed has any H, than the KMnO4 oxidises the C=O to COO- as well.

And after subsequent acidification, the COO- converts to COOH group.

 

NOTE : The reaction is exactly same as the ozonolysis reaction.
