What are the components of the endocrine system?
The endocrine system is a complex system of glands consisting of many glands that secrete substances like hormones. These hormones are produced, stored and released by internal glands directly into the bloodstream to their target organs. It is one of the most important systems of our body which is responsible for almost all the functions of our body.
The major components of the endocrine system are Hypothalamus, the pituitary, the thyroid, parathyroids, the pancreas, adrenals, the pineal body, the ovaries ( in females ), and the testes ( in males ). An endocrine system is composed of all these components which secrete their respective hormones that help in the body's metabolism, reproduction, growth and other crucial activities of our body. Out of all, the pituitary gland is the master gland since it regulates the activity of all the glands. The hypothalamus controls the pituitary gland by secreting neurohormones that regulate the function of the pituitary glands. The pancreas is also a part of the endocrine system along with the digestive system, therefore, it is known as a mixed gland. The thyroid glands help in the growth of the brain and nervous system. The parathyroids help in the regulation of calcium whereas the adrenals are involved in the fight/flight reaction. The pineal glands secrete melatonin that helps in the circadian rhythm. The ovaries and the testes are involved in reproduction in the female and male bodies respectively.
