What are the function of mutation in plant breeding?
Mutation means sudden changes occur in DNA sequences. The mutation occurs randomly. It also occurs during DNA replication and any changes occur in the DNA sequence lead to random mutation. The mutation causes a change in phenotype. The physical agent or chemical due to which mutation occurs known as mutagen and organisms in which the mutation occurs is called mutant. DNA change caused by mutagen. The mutation occurs due to exposure to ultraviolet rays, harmful chemicals, etc. So examples of mutagen are ultraviolet rays, x-rays, and some chemicals.
Breeding is sexual reproduction. This process helps to produce offspring. It occurs in both animals as well as in plants. In animals, kingdom breeding is a natural process. It helps to improve desirable qualities in the organisms. Different types of breeding occur like inbreeding, outbreeding, crossbreeding, controlled breeding, etc.
