Claviceps purpurea is an ergot fungus. It grows on ears of rye and related forge and cereal plants. It most commonly affects the outcrossing species like rye, triticale, barley, and wheat. It rarely affects oats.

Consumption of seeds or grains contaminated with the sclerotial stage structure of Cleviceps purpurea, the ergot sclerotium causes ergotism in the humans and other mammals. Ergotism is a pathological syndrome that occurs by the long-term ergot poisoning.
