REFERENCES:

One afternoon, a soldier came home to his mother and his daughter. He entered their house
and did not see either of them so he made himself comfortable in the living room.
Moments later, his mother entered the living room from the kitchen followed by his daughter.
Both were surprised to see him in his uniform in their living room.
“My, son! I thought you were in the battlefield,” gasped the mother, hugging her son tightly.
“Daddy, you’re home!” cried the little girl as she excitedly ran to her father.
The man released himself from his mother’s hug and scooped his daughter up as he replied to his
mother, “I’ve come home.” To his daughter he said, “I’m so happy to see you!” and kissed her.
“I’m so happy to see you, too. I’ve missed you!” said the little girl and hugged her father tightly.
“How did you get inside? The front door was locked. I made sure it was locked, you know, for
your daughter’s safety,” said the mother. She was still bewildered. She couldn’t believe that her son was
finally home from the war.
The soldier just laughed and said, “What is important is I’m home now.”
“Anyway, I’ll get you some snacks. You must be hungry,” she said and headed to the kitchen.
“Okay, Mom,” said the soldier. The soldier carried his daughter in his arms to the glass window
and looked outside. The glow of the afternoon sun was streaming down from the window to the floor of
the living room.
The little girl noticed her father’s red scarf around his neck and asked, “Dad, what’s this on your
neck?”
The soldier replied, “Oh, this? It’s just a scarf”.
“Here let me take that off,” offered the little girl.
“Oh, no, no, no! Please don’t or my head would fall off,” came the quick reply of the soldier
followed by a cheerful laugh.
The little girl joined in in the laughter and settled in in the living room sofa to play.
The mother came in later from the kitchen with a tray of sandwiches and two glasses of juice in
her hands for her son and granddaughter. “Here you go. You must be hungry,” she said.
“Actually, Mom, I’m not hungry” said the soldier. “Maybe later?”
The mother sat on the sofa, placed the tray on the tea table, gave some sandwich to the little girl,
and put her glass of juice on the table.
“Very well then. I’ll just put these refreshments on your bedside table in case you would feel
hungry later,” his mother offered.
“That would be great, Mom. Thanks,” said the soldier.
The mother stood up, picked up the tray of refreshments, and headed to her son’s bedroom. When
she came out of the bedroom later, she said, “Well, enjoy the afternoon with your daughter. I’ll be in the
kitchen if you need me.”
“Sure, Mom,” said the soldier cheerfully.
Dinner came and the soldier still had no appetite and was still in his uniform and red scarf which
continued to puzzle his mother. He settled in for the night in his bedroom.
Around 7:00 o’clock the following morning, the mother went to her son’s bedroom to check in on
him and to see if he was feeling better. She found that his bedroom door was wide open and he was not in
the room. She saw that his tray of refreshments was empty. She smiled, thankful that her son must have
had finally gotten his appetite back. She looked around the house and outside the house, but she could not

find him. Then, she came to some sandwiches on the grass right outside and below her son’s bedroom
window.
Bewildered, she thought to herself, “But these were the sandwiches that I made yesterday! Why
did he throw these away?” Shaking her head, she picked up the sandwiches and threw them in the bin
outside the house.
Puzzled by everything that was going on, she went back inside the house. She went to her
granddaughter’s bedroom to check in on her and found that she was still asleep.
The mother then went to the kitchen to prepare some breakfast and thought that maybe her son
just went for a morning walk.
Half an hour later, the doorbell rang. The mother opened the front door and found two soldiers
outside looking concerned.
“Good morning, Ma’am,” greeted the first soldier.
“Good morning, gentlemen. How may I help you?” the mother replied.
“We’re here to tell about something. It’s about your son,” the second soldier began.
“We regrettably break the news to you that your son was killed in action yesterday afternoon,” he
added.
“You must be kidding, right?” the mother said. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“I’m so sorry, Ma’am, but we are serious,” said the first soldier.
“That couldn’t be!” she cried in disbelief. “No! He came home yesterday afternoon. I swear he
was here with us the whole time!” She was still in shock, holding back her tears.
“We’re so so sorry, Ma’am. He was hit by a bullet in his neck yesterday,” continued the first
soldier.
“Noooo!” cried the mother. The second soldier could only hug her as she cried inconsolably
