What do media do to people?

Expert Solution
INTRODUCTION

In society, people will carry social interactions. These social interactions are driven by the several social intentions and social gains that individual calculates in the initial phase to maximize the social gains from the whole interaction. However, several social institutions have an effect on the individual cognitive aspects that shape the behavior unknowingly.

EXPLANATION

Media is a platform in society that shares information with the people in the society. It consists of print media, electronic media, digital media, etc. It is an inherent force in contemporary culture. Sociology defines the mediated culture as the result of the mass media which creates it. Media does major activities to the people in the society.

Social interactions:  it shapes the social interactions of the people. People in society will create personal relationships with the characters in the media texts. It also creates a common ground for the people to carry out the social interactions.

Identify: people in society identify the part of themselves in the texts written by the media. This happens through the characters that the media represents and also the circumstances that the text is presented.

Inform and educate: media is responsible for sharing the information to the individual from the different geographical locations. The people will gain knowledge about their surroundings and make changes in their behavior to comply with the surroundings.

Entertain: media also shares the information and the text that is used for entertaining the people. It helps people to have a positive effect on psychological and mental dysfunctions.

However, several theories in the contemporary context describe the role of media and their orientation towards society's people.

The class-dominant theoretical view argues that the media is the replica of the interest of the dominant group in society. The economically dominant class in the society uses the media where they spread their dominant views and interest into the society by legitimizing them through the media. They spread the information through the media to the larger society to make them believe and act accordingly, which will benefit the dominant groups.
