Question

What happens to glucose, lipids, and amino acids during
the absorptive state?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The process of breakdown of food that occurs in the body with the assistance of the organs of the gastrointestinal system is defined as digestion. The complex biomolecules present in food including carbohydrates, lipids, and fats are broken down into their simpler forms which are available for cellular utilization.

Step 2
  • Glucose: In the absorptive phase, glucose can be utilized in various ways. It can be used as a primary energy source, can be stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen, can be converted to triglycerides in the liver, and can also be converted into triglycerides for storage in fatty tissue.
  • Amino acid: In the absorptive phase, amino acids are transported to the liver where they are converted to ketoacids. These ketoacids are further oxidized and used as the liver's main energy source.
  • Lipids: Lipids in the absorptive phase are transported in chylomicrons to the fatty or adipose tissue where they can be stored or can be utilized as tissue fuel.
