What has happened to the size of the central vacuole when Elodea is in distill water

Expert Solution
Step 1

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from their region of higher concentration to their region of lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.

When a cell is exposed to an environment where the surrounding solution is less concentrated than the inside of the cell, it leads to the inward flow of water making the cell swell up. This condition of cell is called turgid condition.

When a cell is exposed to an environment where the surrounding solution is more concentrated than the inside of the cell, it leads to the outward flow of water making the cell shrink. This condition of cell is called plasmolyzed condition.
