What is the advantage of using stem cells for gene
therapy or gene editing?
Expert Solution
Step 1
Gene therapy is the process of replacing the abnormal gene with a normal copy of a gene for the normal expression of a gene. This is carried out by inserting a gene into the cell of an individual and knocking out the mutated gene. The cell-based delivery of normal gene copy into a body involves the usage of stem cells, fibroblasts, or lymphocytes. These cells are taken from the body and the transgene is inserted and infused in the patient.
