The occurrence of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) commonly and collectively known as “red tides” is increasing in the Philippines and the rest of the world. HABs can cause substantial negative impacts on human health, fishery and aquaculture. HABs and toxins that they may produce threaten food security/safety and sustainability of affected aquatic ecosystems. This presentation reviews the occurrence of HABs in the Philippines. Research and Development efforts can help produce cost effective technologies/strategies for the management of HABs are also reviewed. Comprehensive research programs are needed to provide sound scientific basis for policy determination and implementation of risk management strategies. Managing HAB risks will improve/strengthen the marine economy, protect human health and help ensure aquatic sustainability in the future. question: 1. What is the text all about?
