Question

What is the transport maximum of a substance? How is it different from the renal threshold of the substance?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The kidneys are the primary organs of the urinary system that functions to filter the contents of blood and form urine through which excess and unwanted particles are excreted out of the body. The nephron is the main site within the kidneys which carry out this function.

Step 2

In physiology, the term threshold maximum is described as the maximum value of a substance in terms of its concentration that can be readily reabsorbed from the nephron’s tubular regions into the blood. It is different from renal threshold as this term depicts the maximum concentration of any substance above which its reabsorption is inhibited irrespective of its concentration within the tubules, and the kidney initiates the process of excreting this substance out of the blood and into the urine.
