What is Torture ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The Sumerian Code of Ur-Nammu (ca. 21st century bc) and the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi (ca. 18th century bc), which used the so-called "divine judgement" of the water-ordeal in the evidential procedure, are the first accounts of torture being used to determine guilt or innocence. Torture was employed for questioning by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Torture was exclusively practiced on slaves until the 2nd century AD (with a few exceptions). Following that, it was extended to all members of the lowest classes.

Step 2

Torture occurs when someone acting in an official role causes significant mental or bodily pain or suffering to another person for a specified reason. Torture is sometimes just used as a kind of punishment to induce fear in society. The methods of torture differ. They can be physical in nature, such as slaps or electric shocks. Torture has a wide range of effects on humans. It's inhumane to whip a person's back after heating cutlasses over a fire. It has a mental effect on humans, causing them to become insane.
